Why doesn't......

Microwave Popcorn taste as good as it smells?

We have people in our office who cook popcorn in the microwave every afternoon, and I have to say the smell that fills the hall drives me CRAZY...and not in a good way, either. I suppose it's a better than, say, pickled cabbage...but not much.

I used to call on a company in Northbrook that manufactured flavors and fragrances. One of their biggest products was the artificial butter flavoring (and scent) for microwave popcorn. The strangest thing about the place was that every Canada goose within about a five mile radius would just be sitting on their front lawn looking as if they were sniffing the air. They could smell the food, but they couldn't find it.
There were no other birds to be seen anywhere else in the industrial park.

Make your own. It tastes better, is healthier, and isn't full of all those nasty (potentially cancer causing) chemicals:

The taste is different because the popped kernels are coated with microscopic plastic molecules.

Haha! I'll tell ya!! It's called "food engineering"...I'm sure there are whole divisions of ol' Orville's labs devoted to simply improving the smell, independent of the taste...

I think that each and every time I eat it.
